Our Bali wedding was technically both — a destination wedding and a micro wedding. Under 30 guests, in a location that required travel. The labels mattered less than the experience: intimate, intentional, and unhurried.
A micro wedding is defined by size — typically under 20–30 guests — and focuses on depth over breadth. A destination wedding is defined by location — somewhere guests need to travel to. Many couples, like us, end up with both.
With a micro wedding, you can genuinely spend time with every person there. Conversations are real, not fleeting. You remember every interaction, not just the highlights reel.
A larger destination wedding creates intimacy through shared experience — the travel, the multi-day schedule, the sense of adventure together. It's a different kind of closeness, but it's equally powerful. Both approaches work beautifully when they're intentional.
With a micro wedding, you can spend more per person — premium catering, luxury details, personalised touches that would be prohibitive at scale. The total spend is often lower, but the experience per guest is dramatically higher.
Destination weddings with larger guest lists spread costs differently. Venue packages in Bali or Mexico can be surprisingly affordable per head, but the total investment climbs with welcome events, multi-day activities, and coordination. A clear budget tracker that shows per-guest and total costs side by side helps you make informed decisions.
Micro weddings suit couples who want deep connection over broad celebration, who value curated details, and who prefer simpler logistics. Destination weddings suit couples who see their wedding as a shared adventure — who want to give guests an experience, not just an invitation.
And plenty of couples blend the two — a small, intimate destination wedding that gives you the best of both worlds. That's what we did, and we wouldn't change a thing.
Vows Afar brings couples, planners, and guests together in one calm space — so you can focus on the people, not the logistics.
