    How to budget

    10 min read

    Start with realistic expectations

A destination wedding can be more affordable than a large local celebration — but it isn't automatically cheaper. When we planned ours in Bali, flights, accommodation, vendor travel fees, and currency fluctuations were all part of the picture. The sooner you face the real numbers, the less stress you'll carry later.

We found it invaluable to use a budget tracker that showed deposits paid, outstanding balances, and payment deadlines in one view — no more recalculating from scattered spreadsheets.

Budget by priority, not by category

Instead of splitting your budget evenly across vendors, rank what matters. For us it was photography and food. We put our money behind what we knew we'd remember most, and simplified the rest. That one decision freed up so much headspace.

A detailed expense tracker with categories — venue, catering, travel, accommodation, ceremony, décor — helps you see where you're heavy and where you can flex.

    Managing deposits and currencies

With vendors across different countries, you'll likely be paying deposits in multiple currencies on different timelines. I tracked each one: vendor name, total cost in local and home currency, deposit amount, due date, and payment method. Without that structure, things would have slipped.

Exchange rates move — we learned that the hard way. Build in a buffer. Use specialist transfer services for better rates than banks. And keep a live currency converter handy.

Where we splurged and where we saved

We saved: by travelling in off-peak season, using local seasonal flowers, and simplifying stationery — the Vows Afar Couple Hub & Guest Hub can handle most of the communication anyway. We also chose a venue whose natural beauty did the decorating for us.

We splurged: on the food and the photographer. Those are the things we still talk about. Your priorities might be different — but the principle is the same: put your budget where it creates lasting impact.

    Let go of budget guilt

You've thought about this. You've prioritised. You've tracked every dollar. So let yourself enjoy the choices you've made. When every expense is visible, categorised, and intentional, the guilt fades. That's the power of planning with clarity — and it's something I wish I'd had from day one.
